Movie Villains

I thought it was unusual for Patrick Dempsey to be the Villain in Transformers 3. Which made me realize that some actors never take a role out of their comfort zone. They are always the good guy or love interest in any of their movies. I started to make a list of actors that are always the good guy, or actors that have 1 movie that they are the bad guy in. And i'm talking about guys that have been in a lot of movies. Obviously my list won't be complete or accurate, so you guys (Gerry) can tell me what movie I'm missing.

Only a bad guy in 1 movie:
Jet Li - Lethal Weapon 4
Arnold Schwarzenegger - Terminator
Sean Connery - Entrapment
Robin Williams - 1 hour photo

Actors I couldn't think of an evil role for:
Mel Gibson
Tom Hanks
Jackie Chan
Sylvester Stallone (probably wrong on this one)
Harrison Ford

Actors who are always the villain:
Cari Hiroyuki Tagawa (you know him as Shang Tsung)
Malcolm McDowell

So these actors never try a new role, but maybe that's a good thing. Some of them would be terrible if they changed, so the real question is:
Who would be the worst bad guy of all time?

Here are my top 2 candidates.

Tom Hanks
He's the ultimate nice guy. Take his first initial and his last name and you've got "THanks". He's that polite. He's in romantic comedies, he can play a semi retarded man, or a goofy kid in a grown up's body. He can do it all, but could he make you hate him. I doubt it.

Jackie Chan
Look at that smile. He was in a movie called "Mr. Nice Guy". He fights for kid's wheelchair cushions. When he gets access to a ton of money, he donates it to save the children fund. He even tried to save Jennifer love Hewitt's movie career. When he accidentally hurts one of the bad guy's during a stunt, he rushes to his side to make sure he's ok. He can barely stay in character as the good guy, you think he could do it as a bad guy?

Honorable mention:
Will Ferrell

He would make a terrible bad guy. It's hard to take him seriously. Although he was kind of a bad guy in Austin Powers and he hasn't been in enough movies to qualify for this list.

  1. this is a quality post. very thought provoking
its sometimes hard to say if actors were bad guys because they are doing something wrong, but still the hero. i guess the list has to be specifically a bad guy that the audience is supposed to hate and want to lose. an obvious bad guy.

harrison ford is always a good guy as well. also bruce willis, even when he's the "bad" guy, he's kind of a good guy.

people that are always bad guys
alan rickman -bad guy from die hard, prince of thieves, quigley down under, sweeney todd
dennis hopper - bad guy from waterworld, speed, super mario bros.
ed harris - bad guy from the rock, national treasure, enemy at the gates

  2. i meant to put harrison ford is always a good guy except in what lies beneath.

also, clint eastwood is always a good guy.

heres what i mean about the good "bad" guy
you couldnt think of someone for mel gibson. he's kind of the bad guy in payback, but you root for him even though he's killing people.

malcolm mcdowell is fantastic, he's even the voice of the bad guy in fallout 3. if he's in a movie, guaranteed bad guy.

also, jason isaacs is a good bad guy. you might not recognize the name, but he's the bad guy in the patriot, harry potter, peter pan.

jet li was a bad guy in The One also

its hard to beat tom hanks for someone that cant be a bad guy

elijah wood is always a good guy except in sin city

  3. I thought of a lot of these but didn't write them down, then forgot to include them in my post.
    I meant to put:
Bruce willis is a bad guy in the Jackal.
And clint eastwood as always a good guy.
Jet li's not really fair, he was the good guy and the bad guy in "The One." He's also the bad guy in "War" until the very end when he becomes the good guy.

Alan Rickman and Dennis Hopper are fantastic additions to the always bad guy category, I completely overlooked them.

  4. Jet Li -
    Lethal Weapon 4
The One - Played a bad version of himself
The Mummy Part 3 - Tomb of Dragon Emperor
War - Plays an assassin killing the "Good Guys." Turns out he was the good guy all along.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger
    Terminator
End of Days - Plays a bad guy for a few minutes
Terminator Salvation - They used his face CGI style @ the end.

    Robin Williams
I would say Mrs. Doubtfire because in real life that would be illegal.

I can't think of any more for Sean Connery, guys a saint.

  5. Tom Hanks was a criminal in "Lady Killers" trying to get Big Mommas money from the house he was renting.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Everyone from Alla's home country though Stallone was the bad guy in Rocky 4. But he was the bad guy in Spy Kids.

  7. got an addition for each category
actor that cant be a bad guy
shia lebouef, no way you could take him seriously while he screams "no" and stutters.

    one more great bad guy
gary oldman - book of eli, air force 1, fifth element

good guy who is bad in one movie
leonardo dicaprio - catch me if you can
denzel washington, always good guy except training day

also, will ferrell was teh bad guy in zoolander, so it can be done, but only in a goofy movie.
same with christopher walken, he can be a bad guy as long as he's not completely serious. balls of fury, the rundown, batman returns

this guy is always a bad guy, and he's always a mexican gangster bad guy, he's the definition of typecast. noel gugliemi, i think if someone writes a script and puts the words "sup holmes" in there, it automatically goes to this guy. i scrolled through his characters on imdb, most of them say latino convict

  8. "Cari Hiroyuki Tagawa (you know him as Shang Tsung)"

In Rising Sun (with Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes) he is portrayed as the bad guy (they thought he killed a woman.) You find out that his face was photoshopped onto the killers body, and then he is portrayed as the good guy working with Blade and 007.

The producers probably thought that no one would believe this so they killed him off literally 10 minutes later.

  9. Gary Oldman best role as a bad guy is in "The Professional."

Probably the most versatile actor of all time. You could probably ask him to play a black homeless man with no legs who ends up getting set back in time to kill Bill and Ted all while trying to raise his daughter who he gave birth too @ a Walmart, and all he would say would be "Should I grow a mustache for this part?"

  10. Can you think of any women that are always bad or good

    ReplyDelete
  11. helena bonham carter - bad guy in harry potter, alice in wonderland, fight club

this is tough though, even when i tried looking up lists online, nobody has one for women.
    someone put kathy bates

i did come across a list of actors/actresses that play the same character in every movie
this could be a whole new post
ryan reynolds, steven seagal, will smith, vince vaughn, paul walker

    ReplyDelete
  12. Very Tough for Women but Helena Bonham Carter is probably the top one. Even in Sweeney Todd she was a villain of some sorts. But she was in Planet of the Apes and she was "good."
    Help us Dr Zauis.

Same character in every movie has to be Steven Seagal & Vince Vaughn. I've seen every Steven Seagal movie known to man, and I call him Mason Storm in every movie. Vince Vaughn starts to rant....and Paul Walker sucks as an actor. If you've seen him in the Fast and the Furious you know that is what you are seeing for the next two hours.

  13. Forgot to post that Paul Walker is a no talent ass clown.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ryan Reynolds has branched out a bit ("Definitely, Maybe", "Green Latern", & "Chaos Theory."

Will Smith in Seven Pounds & The Pursuit of Happyness branched him out. He is either starring in or directing the Live Action Movie "Monster Hunter."

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shia Lebouef = Same Role every movie. Even the one with "Turtle" in it. He's still young but he will play the same character for the rest of his life.

    "No No No NO, nnnnonononononono"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Arnold - Bad guy in Total Recall(well both good and bad)
Robin Williams - Bad guy in Insomnia.

Nicholas Cage - Bad guy in Face Off.....Sometimes.

I don't think that it should count as a bad guy role if they are the hero of the movie but just an unfavorable character.

Like Cage in Drive Angry. Also....as much as I'd like to hold it against you if you were the main character in a terrible movie.....like Cage in Ghost Rider.

  17. Fuck you man....Steven Seagal is a dynamic actor....

    ReplyDelete
  18. yeah, you never know if he's going to break the guys arm or leg.

keanu reeves = same in every movie

    ReplyDelete
  19. Damn this was a long post, leonardo dicaprio was also the bad guy in the talented Mr. Ripley and that is the only movie that the bad guy won.. that I can think of.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Keanu Reeves is a Perfect Example Brad.

@ the End of the "Matrix Revolutions" Neo is Blind, so they put a blindfold over his eyes.....he then puts his hand out.

@ the End of "Sweet November" Charlize Theron puts a blindfold on Keanu....he then puts his hand out.

Same camera angle....I'll try to find a video / picture of it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mike Meyers.....Even when he's different characters....he's the same guy.

Adam Sandler.....Same thing. He always goes full retard.

Maybe it would be easier to do the actors that can be anything. Christopher White, Christopher Walken(Admittedly the same character but it's a great character.), and Djimon Hounsou.

Doesn't Hannibal Lecter win in his movies?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mel Gibson plays a bad guy in real life.
Also you forgot Steve Buschemi - who can play any character and is probably the most underrated actor of all time. besides Dolf Lundgren.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i laughed pretty hard after reading adam sandler always goes full retard, he does in every movie.

also i thought of possibly the guy who has been a bad guy more than any other actor ever
christopher lee - he's been bad guys in ever movie genre in every decade. and major movies too. he's been in 275 movies, so just by numbers alone probably more bad guy roles than anyone. however, if you want to go by quality instead of quantity, he has that as well.
villain in bond (scarumanga), dracula (multiple times), count dooku, saruman the wizard.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's why i didn't put Mel Gibson as one of the worst actors to play a bad guy. Although I can't find a time where he played a clear cut villain, it would be easy to see him transition into it. All they need is his wife to come on set in a low cut shirt and he'll go off.

  25. I think I meant Christopher Lee. I was being racist.

  26. Also....is this mer's first post on here. I just didn't want it to go unnoticed.

  27. I think Merrie posted a while back....it had something to do with Nick Cannon.
